SPEAKER_01

And let's dive into today's conversation. We are back for another episode of Healers Talk Healing. And I am so excited to have Tina Meyer back with us again. It has been a while, Tina, and we want to get reconnected with you, get into the nitty-gritty of, you know, what has brought you to where you are today? What's the story? You know, we're going to pull back the curtain a little bit. Uh just I think it's important for our listeners and uh to get to know why we do what we do, where we've come from, to understand where our connection is to the modalities that we choose to use to support the world in their own journeys. And so, you know, this is what our conversation is going to be about today. I'm very excited. Um, so I think the first question for me would be is you know, what was that first uh instance or impetus that started your own journey?

SPEAKER_04

Well,

The First Memory Of Healing Touch

SPEAKER_04

first of all, I'm very happy to be here today. So thank you, ladies. And um it's a little I was a massage therapist first, and I believe that my first interest into this whole world was just literally physical touch. I come from a family of uh I've got two siblings and mom and dad. We were a very huggy family. I just can remember, you know, hugging each other. And one of my first experiences or remembrances of my dear sister who is no longer with us, um, on my 13th birthday, and I was sick. And I was so sad that I was sick on a on a monumental birthday. And she sat at the end of the couch and she rubbed my feet. And yeah, I'm gonna scary just think about it, thinking about it. But um, so I feel like that was my first connection of comfort and empathy. And you know, I could feel that she, you know, felt bad for me that I was sick and that I was sad, and she was rubbing my feet. So for me, I think that's like my first remembrance of that feeling of what you can get through a physical touch. Um, and then just you know, going through and it just seemed like we were always um, like as I got older, always rub somebody's shoulders. And you know, then when I got into the working world, it was always, hey Tina, can you rub my shoulders at my desk? So um it just kind of evolved from that. And I literally was sitting at a desk in a cubicle at a at a job thinking, is this it for me? Is this all I've got? I'm gonna be sitting here for the rest of my life in these, you know, boring walls, punking away at a computer. And my phone rang, and it was a friend of mine, and she said, What are you doing tonight? And I said, I don't know, what are we doing tonight? And it was an open house to a massage, um, it was a massage open house uh for a massage school. And I went, and as they say, the rest is history. So that's how I got

From Cubicle Life To Massage School

SPEAKER_04

into this whole world. That was a 1990, um, I think 1994, 1995. Okay. And yeah. And then, you know, so I went through massage school, did all that, became a massage therapist, and then I started teaching at a local massage school, and I met a wonderful friend that um is a reflexologist. So she introduced me into the wonderful world of reflexology. And um, I we would exchange um services. I took her classes at the massage school, and then I would we would exchange services, me massaging her, and then she would do reflexology on me. And then after a little while, she said, you know, Tina, you really need to start doing reflexology on me. So she on in a very casual um way. Encouraging way, yeah. Encouraging way, she taught me reflexology, just you know, on my massage table, you know, in my studio here. So that's how I became interested in reflexology. And then years later, she was going to retire and she said, you know, you really need you really need to get certified in reflexology. So, and I believe that was in about 2015. So I went to uh reflexology school um and have never regretted it. It has been one of the best things I've ever done to add to what I already do. Um the world of reflexology is just amazing. Uh, this there's just outstanding people in our field. There's really exciting um uh case studies and research being done right now for the world of reflexology that just for us reflexologists just make us makes us so happy. So we're really moving and grooving with uh the the world of reflexology. And I'm very involved. I serve on two reflexology boards, I teach reflexology. Um and I just I love it. I love everything about it.

SPEAKER_02

That well, you know, it's interesting as you're sharing your story. I was thinking, isn't it marvelous how the universe really leads us in it to exactly where we need to be? And for you, it was touched because massage and reflexology involves both

Finding Reflexology And Getting Certified

SPEAKER_02

of those things. And you are excellent at it. For those of you that may not know, Tina is my uh masseuse. I see her very regularly. And it's it, I love the way you started off with the fact that touch with your mom, it's it is healing because it's it's also that expression of love. And it just helps the body, you know, connect, which actually helps the emotional mental aspects connect too in a way that's that's so wonderful. And I hadn't heard that story before. So I think that's that's that is absolutely wonderful. And then how many of us raise your hand, have been in jobs, or worked other things, and uh said, hmm, this may not be for me, however one may express that to themselves. Um and then you just go, that's it. And again, the universe just continues to guide us in the way that we we need to go. So I think that's a wonderful, uh a wonderful aspect. So you stuck with massage and

Do Practitioners Get Tired Too

SPEAKER_02

reflexology for all these years. One of the questions I have is in the practice itself, um do you ever get tired? Like do your hands or your whatever parts of the body that you massage with, do you get tired? And you well, that's my first part. First part of the question, then I'll ask the second part.

SPEAKER_04

Yes, absolutely. I get tired. Um, I've been doing this for 30 years plus, and I am, you know, I I'm I'm aging, as we all do, and it's a privilege.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, you can't be more than 31, but go ahead.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I'm 31. Actually, I'm 32.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_04

Truth be told. Yes. And um, so yeah, I do get tired. Um, I am very fortunate that my hands have have held up, knock on wood. Um, I I definitely get tired. I actually was laughing at myself because I just came back from a five-week amazing trip and I hadn't massaged or done refluxology for probably six weeks or so. And that first week, I'm like, huh, I can feel my forearms, which normally I don't when I'm doing stuff, but you know, I hadn't used those muscles that way for a while. So I mean it wasn't bad, it was just a little bit of, you know, it's like, oh, I do get I do use those muscles. So um it was kind of funny, but yeah, I I do get tired and um I usually I take good care of myself. I try to incorporate stretching, and um, if it gets so bad, you know, I call my massage therapist or my reflexologist. Good, you have one too. Absolutely, absolutely. So I always make sure I I keep up on that, my own self-care.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm. That's that's very good. And speaking of self-care, so if someone um, well, I cannot do any type of massage on myself on any or reflexology because my body is like a rock all the time. That's why I go to Tina so often. So glad you live so close. In any event, um, if a person is having um some kind of issue, typically what I find is either stress or headaches or you know, things of that nature. Um if there isn't a Tina in their area, then what can one do to help themselves be able to like relieve some of the tension or whatever that might be building up?

SPEAKER_04

Well, what I suggest to my clients for the in-between times when they can't come in and see me is um

Simple Nervous System Reset Tools

SPEAKER_04

before I get into the reflexology part, just your self-care, you know, breathing is always so uh important. I mean, they actually even have you know breathing classes. Um, so breathing, um, just taking those moments, which you you both are very um good at, you know, taking those moments to just take, you know, even five minutes just to sit quietly, don't have to get into a deep meditation, but just you know, sit quietly to calm your your uh central nervous system down. Go outside, walk in the grass, as they say, go hug a tree. Um, you know, all of these things can really help to calm our central nervous system. Um listen to music. Humming actually stimulates um the nerve that I'm not going to be able to come up with right now in the back of our neck, um, but it stimulates that. So there's all these things that you can do that are simple that really helps to lower our our um anxiety levels, our you know, nervous system and all that. And then yes, I agree with you doing self-massage is really difficult. I mean, I try to get my shoulders and yes, it's not the same. It's just not the same. No, however, with reflexology, it's a beautiful thing because we have our hands readily available, we have our ears readily available, and then we have our our feet. To be honest, feet are a little bit harder if we're not flexible. So to you know, to do self-help, self-reflexology on our feet, you have to put it up on your own lap and and do the reflexology on your own feet. That is always a little bit more difficult, but the hands, look at this. My hand is right here. This is my low back region. This is the the reflex points for the low back. I just can come in and I can just reflex just like that as I'm talking to you on this lovely okay. That's solar plexus. If we're feeling stressed, just hold that solar plexus point. So there's it's so easy and it's so available. Here's also we have our ears right now. I have a table that I can put my elbows on and I can just go right in and just hold these points

Self-Reflexology With Hands And Ears

SPEAKER_04

as I'm talking to you. This I'm holding what's called zero point. This is a really relaxing point, and I can just, as I'm sitting here right now, just put my fingers in my ears as sound, and I can work my ears. So that is what's so wonderful with reflexology, is that it's just it's available as we're standing in line at the grocery store, as we're sitting here watching TV, as we're watching this podcast, you can come in and you can just do reflexology on yourself, and that just it's uh it can help us in so many different ways.

SPEAKER_02

I love it. I love it. Would you do you also um you just mentioned a few other modalities for self-care? So do you also use uh other modalities? And of course, I'm I'm going to assume that everything you're speaking about, you experience, you do, you've so forth, which well, I already know that. But in any event, um what other um what other aspects do you utilize for yourself and that you find beyond the touch, because you mentioned your mom's touch, that really resonates with you as well and helps you with with your self-care, and that you may use in reference to working with uh clients and that sort of thing.

SPEAKER_04

Uh well, I love my yoga. I am very happy when I'm on my yoga mat. So I try to get on my mat as often as possible. And I also dance. I've been dancing since I was 19. Um, not Broadway. What? In my mind, I feel like I am Broadway. I come out that way on the on the dance. I love my dance. I take a dance class two to three times

Yoga Dance And Living In Your Body

SPEAKER_04

a week. It's a wonderful Latin-infused uh jazz class. Oh, she's classically trained in jazz, but she's also from Argentina, so it's just a super fun class. So I just and she was actually talking about it yesterday, also, which is just you know, you can be whatever you want to be when you're on outside of the dance, dance floor. But when you come into the dance studio, you can be whoever you want to be. And for that hour, however long, you know, you can just release all those inhibitions, all those insecurities, and you know, bring whatever it is that you want on the dance floor. And sometimes you can you can relate that to other aspects in your life, such as, you know, if you have to stand in front of people, if you're gonna give give a speech in front of somebody, you know, I'm sure that all the big greats that are out there, they have their own insecurities, their own uh, you know, things that they're not so self-assured about. But you have to, you know, step into that role and um and that helps in every, you know, that can help you come across as a confident person or whatever. Right. But it it's just that it's just bringing bringing it to the front, bringing all those things to the front.

SPEAKER_02

So that that self-expression and movement, which is also what I, you know, the body being able to help clear things out of the energy out of the body, out of the the tissue and so forth, just like massage. So that's great.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, exactly. And then, you know, I try to lead a healthy li lifestyle, you know, eating, you know, eating right. I'm probably at about an 80-20 there. Um that's not bad. That's not bad. That's pretty good if you ask me. That's not bad at all. Because I love I love to eat and I enjoy I enjoy life. I I enjoy all the good things in life. Um, but I try to keep it, you know, uh balanced. There's something. Yes. Yeah.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Well, you know what I'm hearing inside of you know what you're sharing with us is there's for for you historically, there's always been some sort of connection to your body. You it just it just sounds like you you've got this inner knowing to be connected to your body, to be connected to that touch. Has it like has it always been like that for you? Because that's what I'm hearing.

SPEAKER_04

It's funny that you would say that, Nina, because just the other day my husband actually said, he goes, you know, you're so connected to your body because I can feel things differently, you know. I can I'm really in tune to the things that I'm feeling, which can be a good thing, but it can also be a little um not so good because you're constantly thinking, what is this? You know. Oh, yeah. Um, yeah. And I never really thought of it that way. I never I never consciously thought that that was how I am. But when he said it, and now that you're saying it, it's true. I've just always been very connected to my body. Being a dancer at the age of 19, you know, getting into that world. Um it's the dancing world, and again, I'm not professional by any means, but just being in that world with some professionals. Um, you know, you see how they that's a constant, you're constantly looking at yourself in the mirror, right? I mean, constantly. Um, so there's that aspect. And then um my sister, my dear sweet sister, she was a professional bodybuilder back in the uh late 80s, early 90s. So I was in that world to where, you know, there was constantly um, you know, going to the gym and working out with her. And that's kind of what started me eating, eating right and noticing that whatever you put in your mouth is gonna somehow be shown, you know. So, you know, being in that world, um, and then just getting into the massage world, we're all just we're all, as uh Lynn says, we're all healers, you know. There's there's this whole world we're all connected because it's not just massage and reflexology. Then you get into essential oils and you get into yoga, you get into meditation, there's the you know, the Ayurvedic, uh, there's just so many different aspects, you know, uh sound healing and crystal healing, and just all of the different healings that are out there. And we're all in this world, you know, we're all in the same world together, and it's just like how Lynn and I met. Um, yes, we because we met at a at a wonderful function down in Laguna Beach. Yes.

SPEAKER_02

We were just having Laguna Arts Festival, actually.

SPEAKER_04

Art festival and you enjoying art and music, and then we just started talking, and then one thing led to another, and it was like, oh well, I'm a massage therapist, and she's all oh well, I'm you know, I'm in the this world also, you know. She does her her energy and her readings and all of that. So it's just you just are drawn to people, and um it's just very it's a cool, it's a wonderful world to be in, this this world that we're in, not the world, but our human world, our the everything that we do.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, it's so true. As as you were speaking about dance, I used to dance and um professionally way back when. I won't mention how many years ago, but in any event, um the thinking about you know the body and being connected to the body, yes, there is complete connection to the body when and in particular when you Are dancing or moving in a way that is very specific. It has to be, you know, this pose, and your hands have to be this way, and your legs need to do this, and da-da-da-da-da. When you are dancing, and there it's it's not about anyone else, it's just about you. It's so much freedom. It's the freedom of self and the exploration of self. And I find that experiencing that in dance is also what I experienced with your massages, and also with even doing self-reflexology. It's just marvelous in the way that the experiencing the freedom of spirit, I think that's the best way to describe it. And just how much of a release there is is absolutely incredible. But what you didn't mention during uh massage, you have a couple of other things. One is when you do say aromatherapy, which is absolutely fantastic. It really like, as soon as she uses it and she puts it over your mouth and your nose, it's like, okay, I'm out. I was like, relax, guard it down. You know, I think she does that to make sure that you're not like, okay, go ahead and massage me. It works so well. And uh also um the soft music and the light. She has a light machine. Oh my god, I got one because I got one. Because watching it is just it it just takes you into a whole nother place. So uh those are other ways in which, you know, like you can get your your light machine and you can um and and again do the reflexology, get a few things for aromatherapy, but working with Tina is exceptional, or having her work on you is exceptional. And I truly mean that because I've had several massages through the years, and she's one of the best masseuses I've I've ever had. Um and if you're not in Tina's neighborhood, of course, there are massage therapists everywhere.

SPEAKER_01

So I think I'm feeling a little jealous now because I'm up I'm like, wait a minute, I have to fly down to California to get a table.

SPEAKER_02

I think you do, I think you know. You definitely do.

SPEAKER_01

Next time I'm there visiting Lynn, I'm absolutely over.

SPEAKER_04

Yes, we'll make it a we'll make it a day.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, awesome, awesome, awesome.

SPEAKER_04

Yes, yes. That would be great.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I just I just find it um so healing. And I love the fact that you're passionate about what you do because that's why you're good at it. You're very passionate.

SPEAKER_04

I I love what I do. I feel very fortunate that I got into this uh career path. Um as you said, there's no coincidences. I mean, it was definitely I was led down this line. And um I love it. I just um I I'm at a really good point in my life to where you know my husband is retired, so I'm able to um also take off and do some nice little trips, and then I come back and then I work, and it's a great balance. And um my my clients they stay with me, you know. I always tell them when I leave, it's like you can go and see this person, or you can go here, and they're like, no, we'll just wait for Tina. Right.

SPEAKER_02

In the meantime, everyone's like exactly no.

SPEAKER_04

I got I got uh scolded when I got back just recently. This is a long one. This is a long one, and actually just I was thinking on top of when you were saying self, you know, what do I do for myself?

Camino De Santiago Stories And Rituals

SPEAKER_04

Walking. Um, I just spent uh you know uh a week, small week on the Camino uh de Santiago in Spain, and um and I just I love to walk, and that is such an amazing walking is such a good thing for you. It can really it's physical and you can get into your own meditation and all of that. So I just love walking.

SPEAKER_01

I uh I want to know more about this Camino walk because I have uh a lot of people in my circle who have done some of it, who have done all of it, who have done it a many times, and every time it's been a different experience. What was your experience on the Camino Walk? Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_04

Um well there were many. Um it was just again, the walking. I don't I just love to walk. And to when I found out about it, that I could walk in a different country and experience a different country and and all that it had to offer, it was just like I'm in. So just you know, we were able to walk through small villages and you know, forests and beautiful countryside. We had some, you know, there were some uh industrial areas also, but for the most part, you know, along beautiful rivers or and we started out near the ocean. So just the just the sight of it was beautiful. Um, there's a social part of it also because you're walking and you're meeting all these different pilgrims from different areas of the world. I mean, Australia, New Zealand, um, Europe, every part in Europe. Um, I even met somebody from Santa Monica and Woodland Hills. Oh wow, yeah, Woodland Hills, which is in my our our neighborhood. Um so that was kind of fun. Um, and then just learning about their different experiences, you know, how many Caminos have you been on? And is this your first? And and you know, learning, oh, it's like, oh, you did I did what was called the Camino uh inglés, so the English way, and then there's the Portuguese and the French and Spain and all that. So um, you know, just learning all the different Caminos that you're able to take. That was that was amazing, and then of course, food and wine was spectacular.

SPEAKER_01

You're preaching to the choir with the two of us here, okay? Food and wine is our is very um important to us.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, it was amazing, just absolutely amazing. I love seafood, and that was just uh so so good. And then um, and then there's just the spiritual part of it also. So it was um just nice just to be quiet and walk with yourself with your own thoughts. And I really when I was on the when I was on the path, I would just quiet my mind and think good thoughts. I had several people to pray for. So there's these markers that mark the way as you go along, and they have the blue and white scallop shell. Yes, I had to get a tattoo. It's the scallop. The scallop has a lot to do with the Camino and um scallop shells. So you guys can Google that to find out because it's um take a long time. But um so at every marker, they have this blue and yellow scallop symbol that looks just like this, telling you either you're gonna go that way or that way. And at every one of these markers, I would just either put my hand on it or put my hand near it and just say something in my heart, either a prayer or a thought or an intention or a blessing or a gratitude. So it and sometimes they were as close as five minutes away. So it just, and I did it on just about every one of them, because it was my way of just really sinking in what it was that I was doing. So even if I was in conversation with somebody, as we passed, I would just put my hand out and just send that little blessing out on that on that marker. Um, and then just to get into the the sight, you know, all your senses, sight, the smell, the hearing, you know. So smell, there was eucalyptus and pine and um just the the earth or the sea, um, sight, all the beautiful things that I was seeing in front of me, hearing the birds, you know, the wind whipping through the trees, my feet crunching on the ground. Um, what else? What else do we have? Taste. Well, that was just that came later when we got to um and then what else? Feeling, just feeling everything, you know, feeling the the air on your skin and just you know just feeling it all, feeling your feeling your soul. So that part of it was pretty darn amazing too. And I have to say, um, you know, everybody's all oh, it's a life-changing, oh gotta get emotional. It's a life-changing um experience. And again, I don't I don't think things like that in my head, like as I'm doing things, but what I'm feeling right now is

The Shift After The Walk

SPEAKER_04

there is there has been a shift. I'm I'm one, it's kind of comical. Usually I'm like at five o'clock in the morning, wake up and let's go. I'm like sleeping, it's like, do I really like this morning? Do I really have to get out of bed at six? So my my sleeping habits have changed. I've been really sleeping deep. And in the morning, I just am so relaxed in the morning and just really enjoying just hanging out in bed. Um, and I just feel like I'm getting a lot of stuff done. I'm just like I'm purging as when I got home. I've just been purging a lot. And my my brain is calmer. Like I'm just when I have to do something, I'm just calmer at it. And I'm I'm writing notes and following my notes. And so there's there has been a shift, and I think about it constantly. Um, I'm definitely gonna go back. I want to do the Portuguese way the next time. So it definitely um is a life-changing, you know, it it's a lot of people um on because I was looking at websites and Facebook pages and talking to people, and a lot of them said that this is what happened, this is what happens is that it comes after, like the like you're on the Camino, and there's a lot that goes on on the Camino, and then after it just it is still dislike compounds and all of that. And I only did it for seven days. So these people that have been, you know, I met people that were on the trail for five or uh 30 days, 50 days, 80 days. Those people have to feel, I couldn't even imagine what it is that they're feeling.

SPEAKER_02

That would be a massive, massive shift, yeah, huge every part of your being shifting, changing, um moving and moving into alignment with self. Yeah, exactly during that process, even if you don't realize it during the process, exactly, yeah. Realize it afterwards, I think that's incredible. Again, that's kind of how I feel after a good massage. Oh it shifts the energy, the energy shifts so completely, and then you move into alignment with self. At least that's how it should be when you're done with a massage. And and so you had a walking massage.

SPEAKER_04

I did. It really was amazing, and I suggest it to anybody, and you don't have to fly across the pond, as they say. You know, you can do your own Camino, Camino means path, and whenever we were, you know, past somebody, we would say boin camino, which means you know, beautiful, you know, safe travels, beautiful path, be you know, beautiful way. So, and we can do that just here in our own life, just you know, by taking a walk in our neighborhood, you can experience all of that. You don't, like I said, you don't have to go far, far away. It's just that path that we're all on can be a beautiful path. Oh, I love it.

SPEAKER_01

I was gonna say, I I I love that, and I can't imagine how that is also going to shift for the clients that get your special touch, you know, just having all of that, you know, culminate on the massage table or in the in reflexology. Because as we grow and develop, even our our in our gifts, that ends up being something that we also pass on to our clients. And sometimes it's unknowingly, like we don't know that's happening, like you said, right? You come back and you're beginning to process this massive uh um taking that you did, this path that you've been on. And I understand, I totally understand why in the moment you're not it's it the processing is not happening because you're doing the experiencing, and then processing happens. And then my goodness, the clients at the other end that get the benefit of um the you know, the path that you're on. Wow, wow, wow, wow.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, yes, it is incredible,

Workshop Details Directory And Goodbye

SPEAKER_01

So, Nina, I think we're I think, you know what, for now, for now, we are going to, you know, let everyone know that if you want to experience a bit of this reflexology, we are having Tina facilitate a workshop for us on August the 16th. And that's at 2 p.m. Pacific time and 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. I believe we are calling it Reflexology for your own health. Now, this is gonna be fabulous because, you know, as you were saying earlier on, you know, you can do like we have hands and ears, and that's gonna be so exciting. And, you know, we're gonna get deep into it, but we have another conversation waiting for us where we're gonna get deeper into reflexology, the history, the you know, some of the teachings and learnings. But one thing I really walked away with today, Tina, from our conversation is that holistic approach to it all. It's not just one thing. While one thing can be so important, and it can be whatever it is that you're drawn to, like you're drawn to physical touch, um, but there's also the smells and the sights and being um with yourself. I heard a lot of being with self, connecting to self. And one of the things that um for me, the definition of healing is being with your whole self, however, your whole self is. And so I can't wait for our next conversation. The other thing, of course, I'm going to do another shameless plug for us, is maybe some of you have forgotten that we have something called a directory, a services directory, a products directory. You can find people like Tina on our directory, those who do massage therapy, those who do aromatherapy, those who do reflexology, Reiki, yoga, uh, so like coaching. There's so many people that are there that are that both Lynn and I know personally. Everyone so far that is on our in our directory, we have either worked with or we know them personally and are vetted and are just wonderful, authentic people. We're all on a path. So check us out there.

So I'm checking my notes as a 32-year-old. Yeah. Um, so until next time, Tina, I look forward to our next conversation. And until then, bye for now.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, thank you, Tina. It was wonderful, wonderful learning more about your history and uh how it's all come together. So we look forward to our conversation next time.

SPEAKER_04

I look forward to it too. Thank you guys so much. Thank you for spending this time with us.

SPEAKER_01

We hope today's conversation gave you something to reflect on, explore, or carry forward on your journey.

SPEAKER_02

Remember, healing looks different for everyone, but none of us have to do it alone. If today's conversation resonated with you, be sure to subscribe, share it with someone who needs it.
